Last week Tuesday was witness to the first ever Stiletto Den in Vancouver. Eight top women business leaders in finance, marketing, HR, event management and real estate scrutinized the viability of a new start-up business. Could you have handled the pressure to pitch your own business in front of these high-powered Dragonistas?
The Scoop
Paula de Jong of www.SquamishAdventure.com is a young entrepreneur who has created a centralized information hub with an inbound tour operating concierge service for adventure tours in Squamish.
With a fast growing following of outdoor adventure enthusiasts, she shares the local and national reach with business owners who want to showcase their insider knowledge of Squamish’s accessible, authentic Canadian outback experience only 40 minutes away from Vancouver.
The Reality
Understanding that it takes critical, professional feedback to really drive the business forward, Paula jumped at the chance of the invitation to the Den. “I was really excited for the opportunity. But once I was confirmed as the chosen business owner to present, I got a little cold feet,” admits Paula after the event. “I rehearsed my presentation in front of my faithful furry friend, Roopie the dog until I felt comfortable enough to go ‘live’ in front of my dad. He has been my adviser and confidant from the start!”
Paula stepped up to the challenge and was ready to answer tough questions from the panel about her positioning, her markets, anticipated profitability, sustainability of her current business model and the long-term viability of growth.
The feedback she received was invaluable and immediate improvement suggestions have already been implemented to sharpen the offering and maximize all opportunities.
“It is very difficult to stay objective about your own business. Outside perspective from successful professional entrepreneurs with varied skill sets who have walked the path before you is absolutely essential for developing a sound and refined business in a timely manner,” emphasizes Conny Millard, business strategist consultant for women entrepreneurs who led the panel of business experts on the day:” The Stiletto Den is the perfect, safe place to sharpen your model and even the preparation really hones your strategy and pitch.”
