We have recently added a lovebird to our family. Astounded by how much fun and entertainment these curious little pets bring, there is another, deeper rooted phenomena. Carefully observed it is very much associated with the business leaders we work with.
As confidants to a select group of dedicated entrepreneurs, our business owners lead the path to everyone’s success within their businesses. Their day-to-day operation is demanding, challenging and constant. While they are supposed to have all the answers and endless amounts of energy, even the strongest and most confident need a non-judging, safe place to fall apart every once in a while to regain energy and focus.
Our lovebird named Skittles shares this notion. He is full of beans and tries to act pretty tough and intimidating most of the time. Until one creates a moment of calm and centering. Then he collapses, closes his eyes and wallows for a bit in the palm of your hand. Once he has recouped and feels strengthened, he is back at it again – playing, chatting and investigating his world with double the enthusiasm and strength.
Allowed to be vulnerable our business leaders find in us a sanctuary. Much like the lovebird, they give in for a little, letting go of all demands on them, asking for guidance, prioritizing and best next steps. Then within minutes, they come back. Feeling even stronger and much clearer on their focus, taking the reigns of leadership once more.
Understanding the power of the lovebird syndrome, if you feel like crushing under the weight of leadership make sure you find your sanctuary. You will be surprised how a little letting go will bring you back stronger, clearer, energized and fiercer.
